Hiram T. ‘Tom’ Chapin Jr., 97


Hiram Thompson “Tom” Chapin Jr., 97, of Fuquay-Varina, formerly of Greenville, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018, at Universal Health Care of Fuquay-Varina. Mr. Chapin was preceded in death by his wives, Eunice Harris Chapin and Helen Sparrow Chapin; his son, William Thompson “Tom” Chapin; and his stepdaughter, Katherine Tucker Thompson. Mr. Chapin was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater during World War II. He was a civil engineer, general contractor and developer in Greenville for over 50 years.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Summerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. David Priddy officiating.

Survivors include his daughters, Deborah C. Singletary of Clayton and Mary Catherine Chapin of Raleigh; stepson, John A.K. Tucker (Catherine) of Fuquay-Varina; daughter–in-law, Dae Toll Chapin of Wake Forest; sisters, Libby Graybeal (Dawes) of Cary and Pat Withers of Siler City; grandchildren, William Thompson Chapin Jr., Lauren Chapin, Lezlie Matthews and Ann Tucker; and three great-grandchildren.
