The 2018 South Johnston Trojans (14-10, 6-4) are Ben Stafford, David Honeycutt, Brayden Kauppi, Jackson Raynor, Carter Beal, Kyle Raulerson, Clayton Blackmon, Dalton Benson, Clay Milburn, Dylan Honeycutt, Zachary McLamb, Javier Amezquita, Drew Moore, Jay McKenzie, Grant Millay, Jacob Norris, Josh Schindler, Aubrey Pollard, Josh Parker and Parker Stewart. They fell in the second round of the NCHSAA 3A State Baseball Championship 3-2 Saturday to West Carteret.

South Johnston head varsity baseball coach Aaron Parnell said his team ‘grew up a lot this year.’ He said though the season didn’t start like they expected, it was a success after winning their last two conference games and a first-round state playoff game, 2-0, over Cleveland.

Daily Record Photos/Linda Hamilton – Pictured here, in a 4-2 loss to Wake Forest, the South Johnston Trojans were loaded with 11 seniors this season, but the starting team was very young. ‘We had six juniors that were playing on defense and three or four seniors in the mix every day,’ said head coach Aaron Parnell. ‘We’re losing a couple of big bats and two strong defenders.’

Fifth-year South Johnston head coach Aaron Parnell said he’s proud of his seniors. ‘They grew up and took control of (the season) at the end,’ he said. ‘We all stood around together and I told the guys to look around – there’s a few guys here that are not going to play baseball anymore.’ Parnell said his strong group of juniors were humble enough to play as hard as they could for the seniors, while realizing that their time is also limited.
