Barbara Ann Plyler Hamby, 77, of Erwin died Monday Dec. 4, 2017, at her home. She was born Aug. 20, 1940, in Lancaster, S.C., to the late G.B. and Ella Catoe Plyler. Mrs. Hamby was also preceded in death by her husband, Tip Leon Hamby; brothers, Gene, Jack, Frank and Allen Plyler; and sister, Mattie Goodman.
Mrs. Hamby began her working career as a hairdresser and later became the activities director for the Erwin Community Center, a position she held for over 20 years. Mrs. Hamby enjoyed gardening, crafts, working with senior citizens, and cooking for her grandchildren. She also served meals with Meals on Wheels and was a member of Erwin United Methodist Church.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Richard Whitman officiating. Burial will follow in Erwin Memorial Park.
Survivors include a son, Tracy Hamby and fiancée Leslie Wood; daughter, Anita Dorman and husband Eric; brothers, Don Plyler, Edward Plyler and wife Debbie, Grady Plyler and wife Berdina; sister, Linda Plyler, all of Lancaster, S.C.; grandchildren, Logan and Abbie Hamby; and sisters-in-law, Elfreda Plyler of Lancaster, S.C., Barbara Plyler of Austin, Texas, and Marlene Plyler of Saginaw, Mich.
Visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home.
