Triton’s varsity girls basketball team overcame a 12-8 deficit at the end of the first quarter to win its Tri-County Six 3-A Conference opener, 52-43, on Wednesday night at Western Harnett.
Anastasia McDonald scored on a follow shot midway through the second quarter to put the Lady Hawks ahead to stay at 18-16.
Allure Smith had 13 points to lead Triton (4-11), which had lost 46-40 to the Lady Eagles in the Harnett Tipoff Tournament at Campbell on Nov. 15.

We just want to keep that positive attitude and keep pounding.”
The Lady Hawks outscored Western 17-8 in a decisive second quarter to lead 25-20 at the half.
Western trimmed the margin to two points twice in the third quarter, but Triton regrouped and took a 39-33 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The visitors expanded the lead to 45-35 when Western’s Lahaina Bell went down with cramps and did not come back into the game.
Bell led all scorers with 25 points and teammate, freshman Makyia Mackey, added eight points.
Kathryn Elliott and McDonald scored nine points each for Triton. Hannah Jackson had seven points. Anaya Lockamy had six points. Ana-Beth Brewer and Alexis Howard had three points each. Zoie Starling scored two.
The Lady Hawks will be home tonight to take on Harnett Central. Western (3-9) goes to Lee County.
