Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Pat B. Harmon, 81, of Buies Creek died Monday, Dec. 4, 2017, at his home. He was born in Harnett County and was preceded in death by his father, Carlyle; and his mother, “Pat” Harmon. Mr. Harmon grew up on the family farm and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at the Cape Fear River.
He attended East Carolina University and was actively involved in the ROTC program. Upon graduation, Mr. Harmon was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and served his country for 20 years. During that time, he and his wife, Joyce, were stationed at bases across the United States and the world.
After he retired from the Air Force, Mr. Harmon worked at Campbell University in Buies Creek for 18 years as the assistant director of the Physical Plant and was an avid supporter of the university and its athletic programs. He was an active member of Buies Creek First Baptist Church. Throughout his life, Mr. Harmon was passionate about American history and enjoyed researching his family genealogy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Buies Creek First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Sowers, the Rev. Dr. Michael Simmons and the Rev. Dr. John Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Buies Creek Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall Thursday from 11:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. and other times at the home.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Stone Harmon; his daughters, Patricia Harmon-Lewis and Martha Harmon; and his son-in-law, Gene Lewis.
