The first day to file for the May 8 primary election began in Sampson County on Monday. According to the Sampson County Republican Party, among them was recently appointed Clerk of Court Dwight Williams. Mr. Wiliams took over the office in January after the retirement of incumbent Norman Wayne Naylor.
Mr. Williams, a former aide to U.S. Rep. David Rouzer, is the first in a field of four Republicans who intend to file this week, according to Telia Kivett, party chair. Two others have announced their intentions to file on Wednesday and a third on Friday. Chris Driver and Barbara Moore will officially enter the clerk of courts race on Wednesday and will be followed by Chris Fann two days later.
In addition, County Commissioner Clark Wooten and Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton have officially entered the race for re-election.
The final opportunity to file for the primary is Wednesday, Feb. 28 ,at noon.
