SJ Boys Win

Jacob Thornton scored 21 points Tuesday night as South Johnston won its Greater Neuse 3-A Conference varsity basketball opener 70-69 at Smithfield- Selma.

C.J. Ray and JaQuain Smith had 14 points each as South improved to 8-5 overall going into a home game with East Wake on Friday night.

The Trojans missed two shots at the line with 10 seconds remaining, but the Spartans were unable to score at the other end. SSS slipped to 6-7 on the season.

“Pleased with the effort,” said South coach Brody Massengill.

SSS took a 42-23 victory in the girls game.
