From Staff Reports
Harnett Central’s varsity softball team defeated Knightdale 11-4 on Thursday in the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference opener for the Lady Trojans.
Starter Jenna Comly pitched six innings to take the win for the Trojans. The left-hander yielded no earned runs on seven hits and two walks. Ansley Lee pitched one inning, yielding one earned run on one hit and one walk.
Lyndsey Brewer was 3-for-3 at the plate, with one RBI and two runs scored.
Ally Swan had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Trojans.
Kolby Medlin had a double, two RBI and a run scored. Michaela Cabe had one hit and one RBI.
Lea Stewart had a double and two runs scored. Tanner Williford had one hit and one run scored. Lee, Kristen Taylor and Shelbie Gill scored one run apiece.
Quin George and Alani Horton each had two hits and one run scored to lead the Knights.
Central coach Lauren Taylor said conditions limited preparation.
“We had a couple of days off (due to weather), but we got to hit and work some and they came out ready to go,” Taylor said. “We’re starting to have better at-bats, have more focus when we’re up there and put the ball in play.
“Our pitchers, I believe, only had one or two walks this game. Most of the time we were able to get the lead off hitter out and if you do that, it puts you in a good position to keep them from scoring.
“We’ve just got to keep on making adjustments when we’re up to bat, learn from the batter before us and keep putting the ball in play.”
