The Buies Creek Astros defeated the Frederick Keys 6-2 on Saturday night at Jim Perry Stadium on the Campbell campus.
The outcome gave the Astros a 4.5-game lead in the Southern Division standings for the second half of the Carolina League baseball season.
Buies Creek (16-7) collected 13 hits on Saturday in taking the series with the Keys three games to one. Getting three hits each in the series finale were Myles Straw, Jake Rogers and Taylor Jones.
The Astros scored three times in the fourth inning as Jones had an RBI triple and Stephen Wrenn had an RBI double.
Buies Creek added runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings.
Astros starter Forrest Whitley (2-0) got the win after yielding just three hits in five and two-thirds innings. Former East Carolina pitcher Reid Love (1-4) absorbed the loss, allowing four runs and nine hits in five innings.
Buies Creek bounced back from a 6-2 loss to the Keys on Friday in which Rogers went 3-for-4.
The Astros took a 6-5 win over Frederick on Thursday night with two runs in the bottom of the ninth as Wrenn hit a walk-off single with two out. Pinch runner Alex De Goti scored the winning run.
Anthony Hermelyn’s RBI double had scored Yordan Alvarez to tie the score at 5.
The Keys had taken a 5-4 lead with three runs in the eighth.
Sebastian Kessay got the win in relief to improve to 6-2.
Buies Creek started a threegame series with Myrtle Beach, the first half Southern Division champions, on Sunday afternoon.
