Southport dealt the Dunn Majors (12-andunder) baseball All-Stars a 15-5 loss in four innings in the first round of the Dixie state tournament in Leland on Saturday.

The Dunn team was scheduled to meet Stanley in an elimination game at 4:30 Sunday afternoon.

Stanley lost 11-0 to Whiteville in its first game. Jackson Lanier and Nate Smith had home runs for Dunn on Saturday. Dunn took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Smith walked and scored after two passed balls. Southport went on top 3-1 in the bottom of the first. A triple by Jalen Evans in the second and a ground-out RBI by Wyatt Lucas got Dunn within 3-2.

Lanier’s solo homer tied the score at 3 in the third inning. Wyatt Avery had a hit in the third before a two-run homer by Smith gave Dunn a 5-3 lead. Southport responded with six runs in the third and six more in the fourth. Southport led 17-5 in hits.

Dunn coach Charlie Stevens guided Dunn’s AAA team to the Dixie state championship last year and has some players from that group on this year’s Majors All-Stars.

“There is a big difference in one year for this age group in terms of maturity,” Stevens said. “Southport had seven kids who have turned 13 since May 1. … The only thing I could tell my kids was that they got beat by a very good team.” The Dunn team practiced at Al Woodall Park in Erwin on Thursday evening with the Dixie AAA state baseball tournament going on at the Nathan Harris Athletic Complex in Dunn.

Jackson Lanier, left, and Nate Smith had home runs.
