This time of year can be difficult for families who are faced with financial challenges. One organization’s goal is to help ease that load.

Toys for Tots helps take the burden off parents who wish to provide gifts for their children but have limited resources to do so. Toys for Tots has begun collecting toys to ensure that every child has toys to open on Christmas.

Little Misses Harnett County were one of the groups who took part in the Toys for Tots toy drive. The event was held at Zaxby’s in Erwin. This toy drive will bring joy to many kids here in Harnett County. Each year Toys for Tots in Harnett County collects toys for kids who otherwise would not have gifts to open on Christmas.

Last week residents came out to Zaxby’s and dropped off gifts along with monetary donations. The restaurant donated 10 percent of its dinner sales to help support Toys for Tots. Area beauty queens could be seen collecting items to help put a smile on a child’s face at Christmas.

Last year 2,100 children in Harnett County received Christmas gifts through Toys for Tots. Jose Cesar Jr., who serves as area coordinator, has been a part of the Toys for Tots for two years.

“It is all about making Christmas morning for kids,” Mr. Cesar said.

The United States Marine Corps Reserve runs the Toys for Tots program. Reservist Maj. Bill Hendricks founded the program in 1947. The mission is to collect new, unwrapped toys during the months of October, November and December each year.

Over the years, Toys for Tots has collected and distributed 18 million toys to 7 million less fortunate children. Through this act of giving, kids experience the joy of Christmas while receiving a message of hope.
