A 2-year-old child died Sunday afternoon after being ejected from a vehicle in an accident outside Dunn.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Walter West of Erwin died when he was ejected from his family’s van after the driver of the van ran off the road.
Reports of the accident indicate that Alicia Miranda Marie West, 26, of Erwin, was driving east on Jonesboro Road in Dunn when she swerved to miss another vehicle. The van went off the roadway and landed in a ditch and Walter was ejected.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is unknown at this time whether Walter was properly restrained in his car seat at the time of the accident.
No charges have been filed in the accident and the investigation is ongoing.
Ms. West was not seriously injured, but was transported to Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn for observation. The other four children in the vehicle were not hurt.
