The Benson Police Department and Benson Middle School are teaming up to celebrate the return of school when they host The 2019 Back To School Bash Friday night at the PK Vyas Community Park. The event is being held from 7 to 10 p.m. to make up for the loss of the Friday Night Hoops program for 2019, according to Capt. Greg Percy.
“Since we had to cancel the Friday Night Hoops program because of the structural issues with the gym, we felt like we needed to so something to get the kids ready for school,” he said. “So we’re going to cook for them and play games with them to get them charged up and ready for school.”
Activities taking place during the event include wiffle ball, kickball, basketball and facepainting. Free hot dogs and drinks will be offered and Kona Ice treats will be available for sale. There will also be an opportunity for the students and their parents to interact with members of the Benson Police Department.
The event will have something for everyone, but “it’s primarily designed for elementary and middle school-aged children,” Percy said. “I think the high schools are holding their own events, so this is more for the little kids. Students and parents are welcome.”
The program will also be the public debut of Benson PD’s new Community Oriented Policing Services Officer Erin Sinclair. Part of the role of the COPS officer is to act as a community liaison at events such as the Back To School Bash.
“We’re still working on getting everything together,” she said. “We’ll have rides, hot dogs, games, pretty much a little kid’s dream.”
All elementary and middle school children in Benson are welcome to attend the event. PK Vyas Park is located at 304 S. Lee St.
