Benson robbery suspect hospitalized

Shot during attempted holdup

An attempted bank robbery Tuesday afternoon left one man hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to Benson police.

Around 4:45 p.m. the suspect, who has yet to be identified or officially charged pending release from the hospital, walked into the PNC Bank located at 400 S. Wall St., Benson, brandishing a firearm and wearing a mask. He then unsuccessfully attempted to rob the bank.

Before police arrived at the scene, the suspect was wounded inside the bank. Immediately after being shot, the suspect fled on foot. He was apprehended a short time later and taken to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment.

Police believe the man acted alone and no other suspects are being sought in the case, which remains under investigation.
