Erwin Chamber Hosts First Restaurant Week

Event to end with The Blue Jean Boogie.

The Erwin Area Chamber of Commerce has declared this week as Erwin Restaurant Week.

Starting today and continuing through Friday, restaurants, including Community Cafe and Tubby’s Diner, downtown, and Zaxby’s on U.S. 421 in Erwin, will offer specials leading up to a grand finale Friday, The Blue Jean Boogie, featuring a free concert by The Lenny Epps Band.

Around 6 p.m. Friday the street will close at the end of H Street, near Tubby’s Diner, where a stage will be set up along with an area for dancing. Music will be from 7 until 10 p.m.

Zaxby’s will be there selling Nibblers and iced tea with a portion of the proceeds from the sales going back to the Erwin Area Chamber of Commerce. Other restaurants will have food available, event sponsors will have tables and booths set up and there will be fire trucks and police cars there for the children to check out.

“This is the first time the chamber has had a summer concert,” said Carla Blackmon, chamber administrator. “We’ve had our street dance on Denim Days in the fall.”

She said this inaugural event was the idea of Kyle Hyduke of Good Hope Hospital, who is in charge of the chamber’s Education, Community and Economic Development Committee.

“He wanted to bring the community together to help support our local restaurants,” Ms. Blackmon said, adding that they wanted to end the week with something for the community.

In addition to a 50/50 raffle, chamber officials will be there selling Denim Days and Prayer Walk T-shirts.

The Lenny Epps Band, a seven-piece ensemble, includes vocalist Lenny Epps on drums, vocalist Nina Epps, vocalist Jeremy Cook on keyboards, vocalist Keith Newmann on bass, Frank Sienkowski on guitar and Jerrell Whitaker on saxophone.

The Triangle band plays a broad range of music including beach music, pop, R&B, rock, soul, funk and classic rock. The band’s play list ranges from Kool & the Gang to the Pointer Sisters, The Temptations to The Doobie Brothers and Louis Armstrong to Billy Joel.
