Gas Prices Show Large Difference In Area

County seat has lowest price in state.

Drivers throughout Harnett County have noticed a large diversity in prices at the current time, with a 50 cents variation between prices throughout the county.

It has been a roller coaster of prices in the county in recent days. Drivers in Lillington are getting the greatest benefit, with prices throughout town at $2.29. According to the website Gas Buddy, it is the lowest price in the state. The decrease began with the opening of a new Sheetz station late last month.

Todd Smith, who lives west of Lillington, was filling up his truck at Sheetz Tuesday night.

“This is as low as I have seen it so I am going to get what I can at this price,” Mr. Smith said.

Sheetz store Manager Renee Hernandez said she has no control of the prices at her store and cannot explain why her prices are lower than others in the area.

“We set our price based on communication from our corporate office, we don’t have control over it,” Ms. Hernandez said.

The second lowest prices in the state are found in Chalybeate Springs, located between Lillington and Fuquay-Varina, where gas is being sold for $2.44 per gallon.

While Lillington area drivers are enjoying the current gas price situation, people in other parts of the county have a different perspective.

Prices have soared to as high as $2.79 in some areas of the county, with drivers purchasing gas at that price in Dunn and Angier this week.

One lady, Wendy Partin, said she is willing to pay the higher prices for the convenience of shopping near home. She was getting gas at the Speedway store at the intersection of N.C. 210 and N.C. 55 in Angier.

“This is where I live so it’s the easiest place to get gas,” Ms. Partin said.

All of the citizens in the county are getting a break compared to the rest of the country. The average price in Harnett County remains below the national average.

The website Gas Buddy reports that the national average has raised for the first time since Memorial Day. The average price from stations throughout the country is $2.86. The average price throughout North Carolina this week is $2.68.

Prices in Dunn, Erwin and Coats, as well as in western parts of the county, fall in the middle range. Dunn prices show the most variation, with one station posting its price at $2.79 and others at the $2.67 a gallon. Stations on N.C. 87 in Harnett County were as low as $2.45.

The lowest prices in the country are found in Alabama and South Carolina averaging $2.53 per gallon.
