DUNN — Mr. James “Jimmy” Dalton Pope Sr., 85, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, at his home.
Mr. Pope was born on May 29, 1934, to the late Vinnie Mae and John Dalton Pope. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Tart Pope; daughter, Jenny Pope Ezzell; son, Alvin Pope; brothers, Bobby Pope, Gerald Pope, and Lynndale Pope; and beloved granddog Charlie No. 1.
Mr. Pope served in the U.S. Air Force both active duty and reserves, and he retired from a career as a mechanic. He was a member of Long Branch Church and a loving husband and father.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, at Long Branch PFWB Church with Dr. Phil Newton, Dr. Elvin Butts, Pastor Eddie White, and the Rev. Richard Murray officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Dunn.
Mr. Pope is survived by his son, Jimmy Pope Jr. and wife Renee of Dunn; a daughter, Judy Pope Gregory and husband Donald of Dunn; sisters, Barbara Harrison of Centerville, Virginia, and Elaine Conkle of Jefferson, Wisconsin; brother, Wayne Pope of Atlanta, Georgia; four grandchildren, Joe Stanley, Aaron Gregory, Tiffiany Parker, and Victoria Butler and husband Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Natalee and Hannah Butler; several nieces and nephews; and two granddogs, Charlie No. 2 and Daisy.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Skinner & Smith Funeral Home.
The Pope family would like to thank Mr. Pope’s many friends who have visited and supported him and would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and first responders at Betsy Johnson Hospital, Liberty Hospice, and Dunn and Harnett County EMS for their dedicated and compassionate care.
