Seniors stay active at Buffaloe Lanes

If you go to Buffaloe Lanes in Erwin on a Monday morning, you’ll find one of the most fun sports atmospheres in Harnett County — the Silver Strikers Bowling League.

The league is made up of 10 teams of three and offers entry to competitors age 55 and up. A lot of members are from Harnett County, but there are plenty of people who come from outside the area because of the great atmosphere.

“No one’s out here getting mad at you if you don’t bowl well,” said Diane Tyndall, a member of team J.D.C, which sat in first place early on in the season but has dropped in the standings over the last few weeks. “It’s all about just having a good time and enjoying fellowship.”

It’s such a friendly environment, you’ll regularly see people cheer on opposing bowlers. Phyllis Edwards of the Three Amigos started off hot this week, bowling strikes in the first several frames to the cheers of everyone in nearby lanes.

“I’ve bowled in a lot of leagues,” said Wes Stillwagon of Gup Wagon West, a team that’s been together in this league for nine years. “But this one is by far the most fun. The people here are as good as you’ll find.”

The summer season for the Silver Strikers lasts 15 weeks, with scores being tallied weekly. Each bowler has a handicap, which is calculated based on scores prior to the season. That helps put bowlers of different capabilities on a more level playing field.

“A lot of us have all kinds of different ailments,” said Donnie Beasley, a member of Mixed Nuts. “But we’re all just trying to stay active and have fun. It gives us a good reason to get out of the house. That’s all that really matters.”
