Elma Laws Hawkins


HURDLE MILLS — Elma Laws Hawkins, 98, of 2417 Laws Store Road died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015.  
She was born in Person County and was the daughter of the late Hubert and Birdie Blalock Laws. Mrs. Hawkins was also preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Homer Hawkins; one daughter, Dianne Hankins; three sisters, Era Laws Carr, Evelyn Laws Parker and Ellen Laws Wilkins; two brothers-in-law, Willard Hawkins and Frank Hawkins; and three sisters-in-law, Nannie Odom, Sarah Norris and Lottie Lynch.  
She was a member of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer and taught Sunday school for over 40 years and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
Surviving are three children, Jerry Hawkins and wife, Barbara of Hurdle Mills, Sandra Hawkins Walker Hicks and Karen Hawkins Purcell and husband, Johnny, both of Durham; one son-in-law, Steve Hankins of Greensboro; one brother, John Laws of San Jose, Calif.; four grandchildren, Randy Hawkins, Jimmy Hawkins, Sabrina Purcell and Selena Purcell; four great-grandchildren, Keiley and Bailey Hawkins and Nyla and Jayla Hankins; five brothers-in-law, Warren Hawkins, Kenneth Hawkins, Fred Hawkins, Wade Hawkins and David Norris; four sisters-in-law, Marie Lucas, Edith Davis, Rachel Cole and Peggy Terry; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at Walnut Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gayla Collins officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.  Visitation was held after the service at the church.
Pallbearers were Barry Parker, James Parker, Clay Parker, Tim Hawkins, Eric Hawkins, and Don Wilkins.
