How well do you know that quiet guy you just shared an elevator with or that woman you see in the coffee shop who always seems to be in a hurry?
We see people every day, but chances are we don’t know them. We don’t know their names, their hopes, their expectations, where they came from or why they do what they do.
Even in this modern world of social media and instant communication, many people report feeling alone, isolated, misunderstood.
Forty-six percent of Americans reported feeling lonely in Cigna’s 2018 U.S. Loneliness Index. The health insurer’s study found that 47% of Americans reported feeling left out sometimes or always; 43% were lonely; 27% rarely felt understood; and 1 in 5 rarely reported feeling close to others.
Our newspaper has always endeavored to keep our communities connected and informed, so we’re starting a new feature with that in mind.
“On the Record...” will run every Tuesday, featuring folks you may know well or never had the chance to meet. And we’re doing this for a simple reason: to highlight all of the many people who make up these great communities we call home. After all, you’re why we’re here. You are why we do what we do in this business. And because you matter — what we do matters.
So we’re celebrating you, our readers. We couldn’t do what we do without you and we need your help in this endeavor.
To nominate someone for one of our “On the Record...” features, email email@example.com or call us at 910-891-1234. We look forward to hearing from you.
