The victim of the shooting is Kevin Massey, a 41-year-old man from Erwin, Chief Jonathan Johnson stated soon after the investigation began.
Massey was discovered after a person working nearby heard a gunshot, walked outside and spotted the victim, Johnson said.
Harnett County Communications Center received a 911 call at 6:04 p.m. reporting a person laying in the road near Triton Quick Mart.
When police officers arrived, they found Massey on the ground with a gun shot wound to the head and immediately summoned EMS.
Erwin Fire Department and Rescue Squad responded to the scene where paramedics pronounced Massey dead at the scene.
With initial assistance from Dunn Police Department in securing the crime scene, the investigation began.
At 10 p.m. Johnson shared his agency had a person of interest who was being sought.
“I want to reiterate that this is not a random act and we do not have any information to suggest that the public is any any danger,” Johnson said.
In this update, Johnson shared the arrest information and the fact his agency recovered a firearm suspected to have been used in the shooting.
“I also want to commend and thank the Dunn Police Department, Harnett County Sheriff’s Office, Erwin Fire Department and other agencies working with our police department for their usual assistance at times like this which makes it possible for our department to focus on getting the job done,” said Johnson. “We could not accomplish what we do without Erwin officers’ determination and expertise.”
