Horne, Holmes, Cooney lead the way

Offensive Player of the Year: Kaila Cooney, Triton

.524 BA, .556 OBP, .666 SLG, 22 H, 13 RBIs

A feared bat in the middle of Triton’s lineup the past four seasons, Cooney finished her prep career with another conference player of the year honor.

The senior third baseman was the Tri-County 3A’s leading hitter, posting four games with at least three hits.

Cooney helped the Lady Hawks to a 10-3 overall record, and an unblemished 8-0 mark in league play to earn the program’s first conference title since 2015.

Triton ended the year with a loss to D.H. Conley in the first round of the state playoffs.

Pitcher of the Year: Miranda Holmes, Midway

11-2 record, 79 IP, 158 K, 10 BB, 1.12 OBA

Holmes led all area pitchers in almost every statistical category and was nearly unhittable for a large portion of the season.

The Barton College signee collected double-digit strikeouts in nine games and fanned a career-high 19 batters during the shutout win over Wallace-Rose Hill on April 19.

She also registered two no-hitters, the second of which was a perfect game during a 10-0 victory over Clinton on April 12.

Holmes gave up just 12 runs all season, helping the Lady Raiders to a 13-2 overall record, an East Central 2A Conference title and a second-round state playoffs appearance.

Two-way Player of the Year: Rhyleigh Horne, Cape Fear Christian Academy

.509 BA, .781 SLG, 28 H, 23 R, 15 RBIs,

4-2 record, 2.06 ERA, 50 K, .931 FP

There aren’t too many plays Horne can’t make, no matter what position she takes for a deep CFCA team.

The Lady Eagles sophomore already boasts one North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 1A state championship, and saw the group come one win shy of claiming another during Saturday’s final series.

Horne led CFCA, and the Sandhills Conference, in batting average while also posting nine extra-base hits. On two occasions, she had three hits and three RBIs in one game, the last being a 3-for-3 showing during the 16-1 win over Mintz Christian Academy to close the regular season.

On defense, Horne was a starting infielder and No. 2 pitcher. She finished second on the team with four wins, two coming via shutout, and was one of four Lady Eagles to boast a fielding percentage over .900.

CFCA claimed its first-ever Sandhills Conference championship, finishing a perfect 5-0 during its league slate.
