Allen, Camels dominate preseason all-league honors

Campbell DE headlines Big South Conference Football Media Day

CHARLOTTE — Campbell defensive end Brevin Allen was named the 2022 Big South Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year this week, headlining 10 CU selections on the league’s preseason team.

The number of picks leads the conference and the Camels were tabbed second in the coaches’ poll – their highest ranking in program history – announced Tuesday at media day in Charlotte.

Allen is coming off an All-American season in 2021, leading the Big South in sacks with 9 1/2 and tackles for loss, 17 1/2, while ranking in the top 20 nationally in both categories.

The 2021 Big South Defensive Player of the Year was also a finalist for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Buck Buchanan Award, setting a Campbell single-season record for sacks, while tying the program single-season mark in stops for loss.

Quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams, tight end Julian Hill, offensive tackle Tyler McLellan, punter Corey Petersen, long snapper Jackson Hayes and Josh McNeely all joined Allen on the team.

Williams, who played just four games in 2021 due to injury, makes his second career appearance on the league’s preseason all-conference team after being named offensive player of the year ahead of the 2020 campaign.

Hill, a two-time all-league selection, led Big South tight ends in receptions with 34, while ranking second in receiving yards at the position with 367.

McLellan, a three-time All-Big South pick, including first team in 2021, has started 26 consecutive games on the CU offensive line. Meanwhile, the Big South’s leading returning punter, Petersen averaged 40.6 yards per punt – tied for third in the conference.

Mike Edwards and Dorian Jones were honorable-mention picks.

North Carolina A&T State was picked to win the outright league title, while Gardner-Webb running back Narii Gaither is the preseason favorite to win player of the year after leading the Big South in rushing last year.

Looking ahead

CU, who set various school records and led the Big South in passing offense in 2021, opens its 15th season on Sept. 1, hosting The Citadel.  The Camels open conference play on Oct. 8 against Charleston Southern for their homecoming game.
