Matthew Bertagnole, executive director of Good Hope Behavioral Health Hospital, earned Horizon Health’s 2019 Program Director of the Year award. Due to shutdowns from the COVID-19 pandemic, Bertagnole only recently received the honor.

This award recognizes Bertagnole for his outstanding contributions, performance and leadership to Horizon Health, the hospital, staff, patients and the community.

In order to achieve the honor, a program director must:

  • Receive high satisfaction survey scores for themselves and their program from the client, medical staff and patients;
  • Maintain a superior relationship with hospital leadership, medical and program staff;
  • Exceed financial performance goals;
  • Integrate Horizon Health resources in the hospital environment;
  • Demonstrate excellence in quality patient care and community education;
  • And, be seen as an expert in their field.

Since joining Good Hope, Bertagnole has consistently met or exceeded census goals and created a stable team of staff who have achieved outstanding quality standards, according to a Good Hope release. Under his leadership and ongoing support from hospital’s board of directors and Medical Director Dr. Ashraf Mikhail, Good Hope is in the process of expanding from 16 patient beds to 32 beds in late 2021.

“This expansion will assist in caring for the growing needs of our mental health adult population,” the release states.

Bertagnole moved from Wyoming with his wife and six children two years ago to assume the role of executive director at Good Hope. He and his family made North Carolina their home, enjoying all of the outdoor amenities that the state has to offer.

Whether a day at the beach, hiking through the woods or finding a community yard sale, they enjoy soaking up the Carolina sun. The Bertagnole family likes to travel and explore the diverse communities throughout North Carolina, according to the release.

Horizon Health congratulated Bertagnole on his achievement.

Good Hope partners with Horizon Health as its management company. Horizon has helped hundreds of partners in the industry improve behavioral health programs for more than 40 years.
