Harnett Central took home both the boys and girls titles during the inaugural All American Conference Cross Country Championships.
SPRING LAKE — During the first-ever All American Conference Cross Country Championships at Overhills last week, Harnett Central's boys and girls teams claimed their respective titles.
In the boys race, Central runner Greyson Culbreth was locked in a dead heat down the stretch for second place with Western Harnett's Preston Gantt. The last few steps saw Culbreth inch past Gantt, finishing the 5,000-meter race in 17 minutes, 36 seconds.
Central runner Kaleb Barden was just behind the duo's pace, placing fourth with a time of 17:56. Fellow Trojans teammates Angel Sirias (11th), Kyle Graves (13th) and Sean Boyd (14th) helped them capture the team title with 41 total points.
Helping Gantt's 17:37 effort for Western was Hunter Frenzke, who placed eighth with a time of 18:53. The Eagles took second in the team standings with a total score of 58 points.
Overhills, behind Noah Chevalier's 10th-place finish, claimed fourth on its home course and Triton took fifth.
On the girls side, Central runner Savannah Godfrey posted a 21:23 to finish third in the individual rankings. Overhills' Sheila Mungai finished just behind Godfrey for fourth place.
Lady Trojans runners Olivia Haddock (fifth), Ellie Vaughn (sixth) and Kalina Monte (11th) helped the team to 32 points.
Helping Mungai capture a second-place score of 48 points for Overhills was Jocelyn Shaffer (seventh) and Mikayla Jansen (12th).
Western Harnett's Gavin Lindhout and Central's Carrie Johnson took home top coaching honors following the meet.
E.E. Smith runner Octavious Smith took boys runner of the year with a time of 16:35, while Rainger Pratt from Terry Sanford claimed top honors in the girls event by posting a 20:14.
The Central, Triton and Western boys teams are all set to compete at the 3A Mideast Regional in Pittsboro on Oct. 30.
Meanwhile, Central's girls will compete as a team at the event that will also see Triton's Camryn Denning, along with Western's Kierstyn Barnes, Carole Brock, Sara Fuentes and Madison Gantt participate.
Overhills will send both its boys and girls teams to the 4A Mideast Regional in Cary on Oct. 30.
