Clemons named Big South's player of the week

BUIES CREEK — After leading Campbell to a win over defending America East Conference champion Hartford, and a gutsy effort against No. 9 Duke, Ricky Clemons has been named Big South Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

A senior guard, Clemons led the Camels in scoring in both games at the Duke Veterans Day Weekend Showcase.  He scored 12 points – including what proved to be the winning bucket – in a 68-67 win over Hartford on Friday.

On Saturday, Clemons shared team scoring honors with Cedric Henderson, Jr., finishing with 18 points – one shy of his career high – in Campbell’s 67-56 loss at No. 9 Duke.

Clemons made 7 of 10 shots against the Blue Devils, 13 of 18 over the weekend, and dealt seven assists with no turnovers in 69 minutes total against Hartford and Duke.

He played just 20 minutes in a 35-point win over William Peace in the season opener, but grabbed a career-high seven rebounds and tied his career best with five assists against the Pacers.

In three games, Clemons averaged 11.7 points, five rebounds and four assists, while shooting 68.2% from the floor.

Ranked No. 21 this week in the Major Madness Small Conference Top 25 poll, the Camels (2-1) return to action Thursday in a 7 p.m. tip-off at Marshall.
