COVID-19 case count soars. Death toll remains the same locally


The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported the highest one-day increase in coronavirus cases in the state on Saturday. The number of confirmed cases has continued to climb since then.

As of Tuesday morning, the state was reflecting a total increase of 2,522 cases since Friday, including the 1,107 case jump from Saturday.

In Harnett County, 276 cases had been reported as of 11 a.m., up from 259 cases Friday. The county’s death toll remains at 21 and 15 of them were residents of Universal Healthcare, a nursing home in Lillington that has been hard hit by the virus.

Johnston County reported 354 cases and 17 deaths Tuesday morning. Sixteen of the deaths were among residents of Springbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which reported 83 cases (58 residents and 25 staff members) of COVID-19 Friday.

Case counts in other neighboring counties were listed as follows on the NCDHHS dashboard Tuesday:

Sampson County: 409 cases, one death

Lee County: 372 cases, three deaths

Cumberland County: 590 cases, 15 deaths
