Fire and rescue crews from at least eight counties worked to snuff out a blaze at the Enviva Pellet Plant in Faison Friday.

Firefighters in Piney Grove, Turkey, Faison, Warsaw and Calypso were called to the inferno at 2:30 p.m. after a large mulch pile fire quickly spread to the nearby woods along Interstate 40.

Crews battled the blaze for hours with the assistance of the N.C. Forestry Service, which brought in two helicopters to transport water from a nearby retention pond. The Forestry Service also mobilized plows and two planes to aid in the attack.

Firefighters from Dunn, Erwin, Newton Grove, Godwin-Falcon, Stedman and several other local agencies pitched in at the scene as crews worked through the night.

EMS units from Sampson County, Duplin County and Sampson County’s American Red Cross led in rehabilitation efforts among the weary firefighters.
