CU alum makes Team USA roster for Tokyo Paralympics

MINNEAPOLIS — Former Campbell University athlete Desmond Jackson was recently named to Team USA to compete at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo from Aug. 24-Sept. 5.

During the U.S. trials at Breck School in Minnesota, Jackson ran the 100-meter dash in 12.36 seconds and excelled in the long jump to take second place in both events.

The 21-year-old above-knee amputee is set to compete in his second Paralympics as a T42 classification. His first stint as a Paralympian was at the 2016 games in Rio where the Durham native took seventh in the long jump.

Jackson started his professional experience in 2015 and enjoyed a career-best outing during the 2019 world championships, placing fifth in the 100.

Track and field competition from Tokyo kicks off on Aug. 27 and concludes Sept. 5. In a historic move, NBC announced that it will be broadcasting more than 1,200 hours of Paralympic coverage including primetime.
