Eagles overwhelmed in conference home opener

LILLINGTON — Western Harnett lost to Pine Forest, 60-6, in its All American Conference football home opener on Friday.

Western (1-4, 0-2 AAC) had 104 total yards for the game.

Eagles senior running back Elijah Bass had 19 carries for 54 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Bryce Browning threw for 52 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

“I thought we had a decent game plan coming in," Western coach Zach Tenuta said.

"They did a good job of taking some things that they saw we had some problems with against Harnett Central.”

Western started off the opening possession benefitting from five defensive penalties by Pine Forest (3-1, 1-0 AAC).

Then, on fourth-and-7 at the 22-yard line, Browning threw a pass that was intercepted by junior safety Jamison Reed.

By the end of the first quarter, the Trojans were up 20-0.

After an Eagles punt, Trojans running back Zarron Jetter (who had four carries for 121 yards and a touchdown), lost the ball thanks to a forced fumble by sophomore defensive end James Lee.

The next possession, Browning threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jeremiah Steele for his only catch of the evening.

The cowbells started ringing loudly as the fans and team felt they were back in the game.

Then, Trojans freshman running back Latrell Carter had an 85-yard kick return for a touchdown.

The crowd’s energy immediately went away and never came back as the Trojans scored four more touchdowns to go up 53-6 at halftime.

“You got to play the second half like a new game. I want to see how they fought and were able to respond to, obviously, a bad situation,” Tenuta said.

“When you look at it, what we’re trying to build here, we need guys who will keep fighting, and we’re trying to build for the future. "

The Eagles go on the road to face in-country rival Overhills on Friday, Oct. 1.
