The State Bureau of Investigation charged a former Harnett County deputy and school resource officer with multiple counts of indecent liberties with a minor.

William Mitchell Edge, 47, of Lillington faces five counts of indecent liberties with a minor after a tip from the FBI to the State Bureau of Investigation in November of 2019. Edge was the former school resource officer at Boone Trail Elementary School.

“The victim of these crimes was not enrolled in the Harnett County School system,” said Maj. Aaron Meredith of the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office.

A Harnett County Grand Jury returned indictments against Edge on Monday, according to District Attorney Vernon Stewart.

Edge was presented with the charges Tuesday morning when he turned himself in to agents from the SBI’s Capital District Office. After appearing before a Harnett County Magistrate, Edge was released on a $150,000 unsecured bond.

Edge worked as a Harnett County deputy for “probably less than a year,” including the amount of time he was assigned to SRO duty at Boone Trail, Meredith said.

He was hired with the county on Aug. 27, 2018 and was terminated on Dec. 18, 2019, he added in a later release.

At this time, there is nothing to indicate any of the victims involved in the case were from Harnett County, according to Sheriff Wayne Coats.

“My heart and prayers go out to the victims and the family of the victims,” Coats said. “I am confident that justice will be served upon the conclusion of these cases.”

Harnett County Schools Superintendent Aaron Fleming told The Daily Record he had no knowledge of the investigation prior to finding out through news media inquiries late Tuesday afternoon.

“School resource officers are assigned to schools by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office,” Fleming said. “I have no knowledge of the charges involved in this case.”

The investigation into the case is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact the SBI at 919-779-8188.
