Four Camels earn top seeds at SoCon Wrestling Championships

BUIES CREEK— Four Campbell wrestlers have earned top seeds at the 2021 Southern Conference Championships, set for Sunday, Feb. 28 in Boone.

Benjamin Barton at 157 pounds, Austin Murphy at 174, Caleb Hopkins at 184 and Chris Kober at 197 all earned No. 1 rankings in their respective weight classes, leading seven Camels with top three seeds in their brackets.

Murphy (10-0, 7-0 SoCon), Hopkins (9-1, 7-0 SoCon) and Kober (4-0, 4-0 SoCon) all went unbeaten in conference action during the regular season, while Barton fashioned a 9-1 overall record, going 6-1 in SoCon duals.

Three-time conference champion, unbeaten in his career in SoCon matches, Josh Heil (5-1, 4-0 SoCon) is seeded second at 149.

The Camels have two seeded third with Zurich Storm (6-4, 6-2 SoCon) at 125 and Taye Ghadiali (5-4, 5-2 SoCon) at heavyweight, while Gabriel Hixenbaugh (6-4, 4-3 SoCon) at 133 and Shannon Hanna (4-2, 2-1 SoCon) at 141 are seeded third in their weight classes.

A three-time SoCon podium finisher, Austin Kraisser (1-3, 0-2 SoCon) is seeded fifth at 165 pounds after limited action this season.

Campbell, ranked No. 22 in the NCWA team poll and No. 19 by InterMat, has claimed the last two SoCon tournament championships, and three of the last four. The Camels claimed their third SoCon dual title in 2021, completing their second consecutive undefeated conference season.
