‘Steel Magnolias’ to open May 14

Activity has increased around The Stewart Theatre in downtown Dunn as members of Harnett Regional Theatre are busy preparing to raise the curtain on their upcoming production.

After COVID-19 forced the community theater group to cancel shows over the past year, it will open the well-known comedy-drama “Steel Magnolias,” directed by Bob Schmid, on May 14 for four shows.

Curtain times will be 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 14-15, and 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 15-16.

The cost is $15 for in-person tickets and available at www.onlineHRT.org .

“Steel Magnolias,” by American writer Robert Harling, based on his experience with his sister’s death, is about a tight-knit group of women in Chinquapin Parrish, Louisiana. It is set in a small-town beauty shop and deals with friendship, love and tragedy.

The film version in 1989 starred Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts.

The HRT cast features Abigail Jordan (Truvy Jones), Kathy Day (Ouiser Boudreaux), Lynda Turner (Clairee Belcher), Shannon Plummer-White (Annelle Dupy-Desoto), Hannah Anderson (M’Lynn Eatenton) and Hannah Stevens (Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, face coverings will be required by all audience members during the performance. Tickets are also assigned for social distancing.
