LILLINGTON – Harnett Central Middle and Harnett Central High schools have been selected to participate in a seven-year GEAR UP grant, according to a release from Harnett County Schools.

GEAR UP stands for “Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs,” and is a national college access initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

GEAR UP North Carolina is administered by the University of North Carolina System Office. The purpose of the grant is to help students prepare for and succeed in college.

The goals of the grant are as follows:

  • Increase academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education
  • Increase the rate of high school graduation and participation in postsecondary education
  • Increase students’ and families’ knowledge of postsecondary options, preparation requirements, and financing.

GEAR UP provides support to district leadership, teachers, school counselors, students and families through the following services:

  • Professional Development
  • Rigorous Academic Curriculum
  • Family and Community Outreach
  • Student Mentoring
  • Student Supportive Services
  • Students will benefit from STEM and computer science enrichment opportunities during the school year and summer.

GEAR UP NC is partnering with the North Carolina Community College System to expand apprenticeship opportunities for students. Students and their families will also get financial aid counseling, college and career advising, and mentoring to find the right fit for college. To help students have a successful transition to college, coaching services will be provided during the first year of the student’s college experience.
