FAYETTEVILLE — The Harnett Central tennis team continued its best season in recent years with a successful outing to its North Carolina High School Athletic Association dual team playoff opener Wednesday.

Competing in the 3A East bracket, No. 12 Central claimed a 6-3 victory at fifth-seeded Cape Fear High School, which had lost just once during the regular season.

The Trojans (14-3) advance to a second-round matchup with fourth-seeded Fike on Tuesday, May 3.

Logan Stroud, Tyler Greger and Landis Eller each earned straight-sets wins in singles action. Meanwhile, Taylor Davenport gave Central a 4-2 lead with his thrilling triumph over Cape Fear’s Nolan Jacob in three sets at the No. 4 seed.

In doubles, the Trojans claimed two of the three matchups.

Greger and Reagan Gray topped Chayton Gilmore and Tyler Edwards, 8-3. Stroud and Eller teamed up to defeat Jacob and Daniel Seagroves, 7-4.

The only doubles loss came at No. 1 when Jacob Brown and Davenport fell 8-3 to Spencer Hales and Tristan Whetsell.

Stroud and Gray are also set to participate in regionals Friday afternoon at Burlington Tennis Center as the No. 2 seed from the All American Conference.

Tuesday’s second-round team action from Wilson is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
