Area-wide flooding from a deluge of rain Monday prompted a 12,000 gallon sewage spill in Dunn.

The city reported the discharge of untreated wastewater occurred at the eastside pump station on N.C. Highway 55 east.

City officials say the discharge happened “when the wastewater flow exceeded the pumping capacity due to area-wide flooding.”

The sewage spilled into an unnamed tributary to Mingo Swamp in the Cape Fear River Basin.

The Division of Water Resources was notified of the event on Tuesday and is reviewing the matter.
