Daily Record Player of the Week Francisco Martinez discusses his expanded role as a scorer this season.
ERWIN — Playing mostly a secondary role for offensively talented Triton boys soccer teams the past three seasons, Francisco Martinez is quickly becoming a main cog in his senior year.
Martinez helped the Hawks to a pair of wins last week, scoring three goals in the process.
He's now the team's second-leading scorer, which comes as no surprise to Triton coach Brian Foster.
"Franciso has been working on his finishing. And it was really obvious when he showed up for the first workout in the summer," he said.
"He came out and we were running a drill, and he murdered about three in a row and about ripped the net off. ... He's got a wicked left foot and he's great in the air."
Martinez credits the extra practice at home this offseason for his recent successes. Most notably, he set up individual stations, such as ladder drills, to improve his footwork.
During a 9-0 win over Westover last Monday, Martinez was one of two Hawks players to notch a pair of goals. Fellow senior Benny Villalvazo also scored twice in what was the group's first All American Conference victory.
Martinez drew within one goal of Villalvazo (nine total goals) for the overall team lead during Thursday's 2-1 home victory over nearby rival Midway. He found the net in the first half as the Hawks held on for a third straight win.
Triton (6-2) is moving in the right direction, which Martinez feels bodes well for everyone's hopes when the regular season concludes.
"I feel like we're doing pretty good ... we want to go to the playoffs," he said.
Below is Martinez's acceptance speech, along with his answers to a set of fun questions from The Daily Record staff.
