John A. Willoughby, 88


DUNN — Mr. John A. Willoughby, 88, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 21, 2021, at his residence. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on April 28, 1933, to the late George S. Willoughby and Myrtle Lee Wilson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda S. Willoughby; and his brother, George Willoughby.

Johnny served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an educator for over 30 years in Harnett County. He was a teacher at Wayne Avenue, and was a principal at Buies Creek School, Mary Stewart Elementary, Dunn High School and Dunn Middle School. He was a member of American Legion Post 59 and a member of Divine Street United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Carolina fan.

A graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery by Dr. Len Keever.

He is survived by his son, John A. Willoughby Jr. and wife Clarice of Dunn; a sister, Sue Bennett and husband Bobby of Wilson; three grandchildren, Hannah, Henry and Lillie Willoughby; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, JoAnn Wells.

The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Memorial may be made to Donate Life America, 701 E. Byrd St., 16th Floor, Richmond, VA. 23219.
