Lady Camels headed to NCAA Stillwater Regional

BUIES CREEK — For the 24th time in 29 seasons, Campbell University is heading to postseason play in women’s golf.

The Big South Conference champions received an automatic berth to play May 9 through 11 in the NCAA Regional at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Ranked No. 39, the Lady Camels are one of 72 teams nationally to earn a postseason bid and are seeded seventh in the 12-team Stillwater Regional. The top four teams (and top two individuals from non-qualifying teams) from each of six regional sites will advance to the NCAA Championship May 20 to 25 at Grayhawk Golf Club (Raptor Course) in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The postseason berth is the 10th straight for CU coach John Crooks.

“The field is extremely competitive from top to bottom. Eight of the teams are in the top 50 in the country,” said Crooks, whose team won its 18th league title in his 31 years in charge of the program.

“When we’ve played well, our results have been outstanding.”

Including host and sixth-ranked Oklahoma State, the Stillwater Regional features four teams ranked among the nation’s top 25, and four more in the top 50.

Campbell earned the Big South’s automatic berth in the NCAA regionals on the strength of a 14-shot victory in the league strokeplay championship followed by match-play wins on April 16 over UNC Asheville and USC Upstate to claim a sixth straight title.

Senior Emily Hawkins was named Big South Golfer of the Year and ranks No. 44 nationally in the latest Golfstat rating. Her average score (71.8) is tops in the league and 25th in the nation.

Anna Nordfors won the Big South Championship by an eight-stroke margin, April 13 to 15. Nordfors, who was voted the 2021 Big South Golfer of the Year, has compiled 14 career top-10 finishes in 31 events.
