BUIES CREEK — Campbell women’s soccer has set its schedule for the 2021 season, according to a recent announcement from head coach Samar Azem.
The defending Big South Conference champs will play a 17-match regular-season slate that features eight home games at Eakes Athletics Complex. The Camels’ challenging nonconference slate includes matches against teams from the ACC, SEC and Conference USA.
“As our program and players continue to mature and grow, we want to challenge ourselves as much as we can with our nonconference schedule,” Azem said. “We have a really good mix of mid-major and Power-5 opponents in this year’s nonconference schedule that will be very exciting to compete against.”
The Lady Fighting Camels open their season at The University of Georgia on Aug. 19, then play Mercer on Aug. 22.
CU’s home opener will be Aug. 26 against North Carolina State, followed by Mount St. Mary’s on Aug. 29. Campbell heads to East Carolina for a midweek matchup on Sept. 2 before returning home against Charlotte on Sept. 4.
The Lady Camels round out its nonconference schedule on the road at UNC Greensboro on Sept. 12.
“We scheduled nonconference teams with varying playing styles and identities that we expect to challenge us, stretch us, and allow us to compete at a high level,” Azem said.
“Our players are excited and eager for the challenge and our nonconference schedule will stretch us in a lot of ways and prepare us for our ultimate goal of returning to the NCAA (tournament) and competing in the national tournament.”
Campbell is set to begin its 10-game conference schedule on the road in a rematch against Big South Championship runner-up High Point on Sept. 18, followed by a trip to Presbyterian on Sept. 22.
The Lady Camels will also travel to Longwood (Oct. 6), Winthrop (Oct. 16) and USC Upstate (Oct. 23) and will host Radford (Sept. 25), Hampton (Sept. 29), UNC Asheville (Oct. 9), Gardner-Webb (Oct. 13) and Charleston Southern (Oct. 20).
The Big South Championship first round will be played Oct. 29 through 31. The highest remaining seeds will host each match of the conference tournament.
Campbell went 8-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in Big South play during the spring 2020-21 season, outscoring foes 26-11. The Lady Camels earned a No. 22 ranking by TopDrawerSoccer and a berth to 2020 NCAA tournament after winning the Big South Championship.
