Campbell volleyball set for 1st NCAA tourney match

BUIES CREEK — Campbell volleyball will make its first NCAA Tournament appearance Friday, traveling to 10th-seeded Nebraska in the opening round.

The Lady Camels earned their first automatic bid to the tournament after topping High Point in five sets on Nov. 20 in the Big South Championship match.

The five-set win marked Campbell’s first ever Big South title, becoming the first team to beat High Point twice in a single season since 2018.

Due to the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, Campbell was not given a chance to compete for the tournament crown.

“This means everything to them, especially our seniors,” head coach Greg Goral said following the conference title. “They have worked extremely hard. They weren’t going to be denied. All year long, through COVID, through the spring season, they just willed themselves to this victory.”

Sarah Colla, the Big South Tournament MVP, paced CU with 13 kills. Chloe Cook and Lailah Green joined her in double digits with 12 and 11, respectively. Green posted a double-double, adding 12 digs to her line.

Emily Mitter also notched a double-double with a team-high 23 assists and 13 digs. Claranne Fechter led the Lady Camel backline with 18 digs.

Madee Miner and Lailah Green also joined Colla on the all-tournament team.

Nebraska boats a 21-7 season, finishing second in the Big Ten Conference regular season with a 15-4 league record. The Lady Cornhuskers have won two of the last seven national championships, taking home the title in 2015 and 2017.

With two top-50 wins on the résumé, Campbell recently cracked the top 100 on the nationally-rated RPI list and now sits at 95th. The Lady Camels face a Nebraska team sitting at 13th in RPI.

The winner of the first-round match, set for 7 p.m., CT in Lincoln, Nebraska, will face the winner of Florida State-Kansas State.
