Today is Election Day for candidates vying for seats as mayor and commissioner on the Erwin Town Board, and Primary Day for candidates gunning to be their party’s choice on November ballots.
Polls opened at 6:30 a.m. and remain open until 7:30 p.m.
Erwin voters are asked to pick one mayor and one commissioner each for Wards 1, 3 and 5. Commissioner Alvester McKoy’s seat in Ward 1 is the only one unchallenged in the election.
In the primaries, voters will select nominees for a political party to move on to the Nov. 8 general election. Contests on the ballot include U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, N.C. General Assembly, state and local judges and for seats on county boards of education and commissioners.
In Sampson County, voters are also tasked with picking their Republican candidate for district attorney.
In primaries, voters affiliated with a political party will be given a ballot of candidates for their party. Unaffiliated voters may choose the ballot of candidates for any party primary. Unaffiliated voters will have to vote that party in the Nov. 8 election.
