Saints' Callahan medals during 3A competition
GREENSBORO – Four local athletes competed and one returned home with a medal during the season-ending N.C. High School Athletic Association outdoor track and field state championships.
On the Class 3A scene, Southern Wayne senior Tayvon Callahan earned a bronze medal (third place) with a time of 14.80 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. He posted a fifth-place time of 39.61 in the 300 hurdles.
A conference and regional champion, Callahan recently signed a national letter-of-intent to run track at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Fellow senior Jerome Moore ended up 14th in the highly-competitive 100-meter dash. He crossed the line in 11.57 seconds.
Sophomore Ta’Niyah Glaspie took fifth in the 100 dash (12.59) and seventh in the 200 (26.02). Glaspie entered the meet as the regional champ in the 100 and regional runner-up in the 200.
In 1A competition, North Duplin senior Melvia Puac ended up 12th in the discus with a toss of 78 feet, 11 inches. She had a 14th-place mark of 28.8.25 in the shot put.
N.C. A&T State University played host to the state finals.
