Local roundup: Eagles snatch 1st win, Lady Raiders streaking

ANGIER— After opening the season with five straight losses, Western Harnett ended the skid with a comeback road win over Harnett Central in a Tri-County 3A Conference matchup Wednesday.

“I’m really, really, really happy for the guys. They worked hard, so I’m proud of them for that,” said Western boys coach Seth Womble after the 50-44 victory.

Eagles (1-5, 1-3 TCC) guard Christian Fielden ended with a game-high 15 points to lead three double-figure scorers.

Fielden hit a 3-pointer to close out the third period and tie it at 31, then opened the fourth with a corner triple to give them a 34-31 lead.

Misha-El Vines added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Ethan Lank chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Central (0-3, 0-1 TCC) made its return to the hardwood following a mandated quarantine period due to COVID-19 protocols.

Seven McClain led the group with 11 points and helped them jump out to a 22-15 lead at the half. Chris Mills had eight points and five rebounds in the loss.

On the girls' side, the Lady Trojans followed Tuesday’s loss with a convincing 54-27 home win over Western Harnett.

Central (3-1, 1-1 TCC) was led offensively by Syniah McMiller and Brittany Mills, who both finished with a game-high 19 points.

Mills’ 3-pointer to close the second quarter pushed the margin to 32-10 at halftime.

Western (4-3, 1-3 TCC) briefly closed the gap with a 7-0 run to open the second half, capped by a Sydney Jackson runner that made it 32-17.

But McMiller led a 6-0 run to regain control and propel the bounce-back win.

Molyneaux added 10 points for the Lady Trojans, who prepare for league-leading Union Pines at home Friday.

Western travels to Southern Lee on Friday.

Lady Raiders continue streaking

Tuesday, the Lady Raiders (6-3, 6-2 ECC) topped Goldsboro, 51-42 at home.

Wednesday, they dominated Spring Creek on the road, 62-10, holding the Lady Gators scoreless in the first and third quarters.

The Midway boys team dropped its fifth straight in a 78-70 loss to Goldsboro Tuesday.

Raiders (1-7, 1-6 ECC) forward Tyler Godwin led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds. Lane Baggett and Wyatt Holland both added 10 points.

Midway travels to Clinton Friday to close out its season series.
