McMiller tops All-Record Girls Basketball Team for 2nd straight year

Player of the Year: Syniah McMiller, C, Harnett Central

16.1 points, 10 rebounds, 3.8 blocks

Despite seeing her senior season interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, McMiller showed determination to close the shortened campaign. She led all Record players in scoring and blocks for a second consecutive year, while also pacing the field in rebounds.

The 6-foot-2 center averaged a double-double to help Central finish 9-3 overall and make a return trip to the state playoffs.

“I spent my time here (Harnett Central) ... trying to help my team out. And just being nominated for a second time is good,” McMiller said humbly.

“I’m very proud of myself. It just shows that I’ve worked hard for these past four years.”

The Lady Trojans were on the outside of the postseason picture ahead of the final week of the regular season with three games remaining, two of which were against the top teams in the Tri-County 3A Conference.

That’s when McMiller said she and her teammates listened to the advice of Central coach Chelsey Cabe, and turned on the intensity.

“Coach Cabe told us that practice should not be fun ... and we just decided that we wanted to work hard during practice and not goof off anymore,” she said.

McMiller’s signature performance came in the week’s first game as she posted a season-high 25 points and 21 rebounds to lead Central to a 53-51 win over previously unbeaten Union Pines on Feb 15.

In the regular season finale, she ended with a 19-points, five-blocks performance to down rival Triton for the team’s sixth straight victory.

“Syniah is the type of player that you watch the game just to see her play. She impresses you on both sides of the floor,” Cabe said.

“I have been honored to coach her over the last four years and she absolutely deserves this award.”

Brittany Mills, PG, Harnett Central

10.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 3.0 steals

The senior floor general makes her second straight appearance on the first team after leading all Record players in assists. She finished with five or more assists eight times.

Mills also helped power Central’s patented pressure defense, ranking second among area players in steals per game. In Central’s payback win over Triton to close the regular season, the rangy guard finished with a season-high six swipes.

She also increased her scoring load during the final stretch, reaching double figures in each of the Lady Trojans’ final three contests.

Kris McKoy, G, Midway

10.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 4.2 steals

McKoy gets consecutive first-team honors after pacing all Record performers in steals.

The junior combo guard posted a season-high eight steals to help Midway close a narrow 50-48 win over James Kenan on Jan. 29. It marked a fifth straight contest in which she finished with five or more swipes.

McKoy also closed the season as Midway’s top scorer and playmaker, helping the Lady Raiders to a 9-3 overall record and state playoffs appearance.

Lya Molyneaux, G/F, Harnett Central

12.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.6 steals

Another key senior contributor for the Lady Trojans this season, Molyneaux was second to only McMiller among the area’s top scorers.

The outside shooting threat was a reliable option on the wing, hitting double figures in all but two games. Her season-high 16 points, on 7-of-12 shooting, helped hand Union Pines its only loss of the regular season.

Abby Hood, F, Triton

11.3 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 3.3 steals

Arguably the most multi-faceted player in the area, the sophomore wing led Triton in points, rebounds and steals. She finished second among Record athletes in boards and steals.

Hood started the season reaching double figures in six straight games, including a career-high 18 points in the win over Lee County on Jan. 19.

Maaika Dones, G, Overhills: 10.2 points, 2.4 steals

Rylie Williams, G, Midway: 10.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 2.4 steals

Tristan Ennis, G/F, Triton: 8.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.5 steals

Elizabeth Mitchell, F, Overhills: 11.1 points, 3.2 rebounds

Makenzi Hudson, C, Midway: 5.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.1 steals
