Midway golfers impress at N.C. Junior Boys Championship

Two local golfers representing Midway High reached the field of 64 during this week's 55th North Carolina Junior Boys Championship.

Facing a field of 150 participants, both Logan Atkins and Caden Hodges each turned in rounds that advanced them through to matchplay competition.

Atkins tied for medalist honors, his second of the summer, after finishing with a 6-under-par 66. The reigning North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2A Men's Golf Individual State Champion played a bogey-free round highlighted by holing out the par-3 sixth.

The Raiders' rising senior also took first place with a two-stroke victory at the TYGA Lane Tree Junior, held May 14 and 15 in Goldsboro.

Meanwhile, Hodges was among the stable of golfers to finish at even par, carding two birdies on the back nine.

In matchplay Wednesday, the Dunn native scored a 4&3 victory over Charlotte's Robert Thompson. Hodges bowed out in the round of 32, dropping a 6&4 decision to Davis Wotnosky.

Atkins' run ended with a  close 3&2 loss to Alan Van Asch in the round of 64.
