An Angier man was injured Tuesday afternoon when the plane he was flying crashed near the Angier/Fuquay-Varina air strip.

According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, 78-year-old Rodney Whipple was flying near the air strip around 1:15 p.m. when he reportedly struck a flock of birds and lost altitude causing his Thatcher CX4 airplane to strike several trees before coming to a halt about 100 yards from the air strip. The crash landing happened behind a local Dollar General Store.

The air strip is located on N.C. Highway 55 just across the Wake County line, north of Angier.

Whipple was transported to Wake Med where he was treated for minor injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the crash, according to the NCSHP.
