This week's update from Southern Wayne sports includes volleyball, boys' soccer, girls' golf and  girls' tennis. 

WENDELL — Southern Wayne battled through five sets before eventually dropping a 3-2 decision at East Wake during Thursday's Quad County 3A Conference volleyball matchup. 

Sets scores were 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 and 10-15.

Three Lady Saints (2-8, 1-5 QCC) players topped double-digit kills. Anna Summerlin paced the group with 19 kills, followed by Gracie Hinson (16) and Katelyn Gregory (10). 

Laura Summerlin totaled a team-high 40 assists, while Allie Lane led the group with 28 digs. 

The Lady Saints are scheduled to return to their home court Thursday, Sept. 30 against Hunt. 

Lady Saints take 6th at CC of JCo

The Southern Wayne girls golf team earned a sixth-place finish at the Country of Club of Johnston County on Tuesday during the Quad County 3A event. 

Caroline Jones finished with the team's low round, carding a 21-over-par 57 through nine holes. Fellow teammates Georgia Fulghum (64) and Emily Webster 72 helped the group to a total score of 193. 

 Wilson Fike took first overall with a team score of 133, led by Bree Council's 40 that paced all golfers at the match. 

The Lady Saints are set to compete in the next league event on Sept. 28 at Willow Springs Country Club.

Saints soccer gets clean sheet at Warriors 

Three different Southern Wayne players found the net during Monday's 3-0 victory at Hunt. 

The Saints scored once in the first half and twice after halftime, getting goals from Abram Sanchez, Wilfredo Aldana and Miguel Campuzano. Meanwhile, Joey Segura collected six saves to help get the shutout win.

Southern Wayne (6-1, 2-1 QCC) faces another conference opponent Monday, Sept. 27 when it hosts Smithfield-Selma.

SW girls' tennis shut out at West Johnston

Monday saw the Southern Wayne girls tennis team lose 9-0 to West Johnston. 

Doubles play produced the day's most competitive action.

In the No. 1 match, Lady Saints duo Kaylee Brock and Alivia Cox worked their way to an extra set before falling, 9-7, to Amanda Leenster and Emily Buckler.  Medjina Joanis and Juliana Leon fell to West Johnston's Ava Wood and Anna Jane Gibbs, 8-6. 

Up next, the Lady Saints host South Johnston on Tuesday, Sept. 28.
