Regular-season play winds down

Conference and regular-season play has reached the final week.

Spring Creek and Southern Wayne each celebrated senior night, while North Duplin visited a longtime conference rival.

Cougars 42, Gators 14

SEVEN SPRINGS – Dylan Davidson’s touchdown and Robert Strickland’s two-point conversion gave Spring Creek a 14-12 lead over Goldsboro with 88 seconds remaining before halftime Friday evening.

The Cougars answered with 30 consecutive points at “The Swamp” and improved to 8-0 all time against the Gators.

RB Wiggins’ one-yard plunge closed the gap to 12-6 with 11:15 to go in the second quarter. After Davidson’s 30-yard scamper, Goldsboro benefited from a defensive pass interference penalty and stepped into the end zone with 3.5 seconds left before halftime.

The Cougars scored three second-half touchdowns.

Davidson emerged as Spring Creek’s top rusher with 101 yards on 14 carries. David Williams (61 yards), Wiggins (27 yards), Dorian Cherry (22 yards) and Strickland (43 yards) also contributed on the ground.

Freshman quarterback Gio Pineda finished 5 of 14 for 92 yards. Strickland grabbed three passes for 56 yards. Gabriel Lopez and Cherry had receptions of 27 and 25 yards, respectively.

Defensively, Matthew Johnson posted a team-high seven tackles. Wiggins logged six tackles (two for loss) and one quarterback sack. Zach Cato and Cory Davis recorded five stops apiece.

David Williams and Cherry had four and three tackles, respectively.

Spring Creek (3-5 overall, 0-4 Neuse Six) concludes regular-season play at home Thursday against Beddingfield.

Eagles 49, Rebels 21

GOLDSBORO – Senior Luis Olivos rushed for a team-leading 89 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries against Carolina 1A rival Rosewood.

Eli Morrisey rambled for 76 yards on 27 totes.

Freshman quarterback Luke Kelly completed seven passes for 48 yards. Senior Landen Kelly reeled in four receptions for 45 yards.

North Duplin amassed 223 yards of total offense.

Defensively, sophomore Oscar Romero-Hernandez and senior Alan Martinez each recovered a fumble.

The Rebels (3-5 overall, 0-2 Carolina) return home Friday for their senior night celebration. Hobbton is their guest at H.E. Grubbs Field.

Golden Demons 49, Saints 7

DUDLEY – Mar’Kwon Smith collected Southern Wayne’s lone touchdown in a loss to fellow Quad County 3A member Wilson Fike.

Smith’s 1-yard plunge occurred with 4:32 left in the opening quarter. Daylan Kornegay provided the PAT.

Fike broke the game open with a 34-point, second-quarter outburst.

Southern Wayne compiled 191 yards of total offense on 53 plays.

Smith led the ground attack with 58 yards on 10 carries. Adam Cain compiled 49 yards on 14 attempts, while Wadshon Pierre-Louis picked up 46 yards on 14 totes.

Quarterback Josh Kearney had 33 yards, followed by Kornegay with eight yards and Caleb Shaw with one yard. Kornegay caught one pass for four yards.

The Saints (1-7 overall, 0-6 QCC) entertained West Johnston on Tuesday and conclude regular-season play Oct. 29 at county rival Charles B. Aycock.
