A South Carolina man was charged with murder after his 5-day-old infant, who was in his care, reportedly died of blunt force trauma to his head.
Harnett County deputies were called to a home at 1944 Cameron Hill Road in Cameron at 2:53 a.m. Nov. 23 for an unresponsive infant.
Deputies arrived on the scene and found the pale, unresponsive boy being tended to by medical personnel, according to a release from the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office. The baby’s mother and uncle were also in the home attempting to render aid.
The infant was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the release.
An autopsy report revealed there was “obvious signs of blunt force trauma to the infant child’s head,” the release states.
Deputies say an investigation into the death showed the home was occupied that morning by the infant’s father, Christopher Joseph Riddle, 28, of Blenheim, South Carolina.
Riddle was charged with murder.
He was arrested in South Carolina and extradited back to Harnett County on Thursday. He appeared before a magistrate and was given no bond pending a first appearance in court on Friday.
Riddle is being held in the Harnett County Detention Center.
